Southwood Middle School, a public urban middle school located in Anderson, South Carolina, is the smallest of three middle schools in Anderson School District Five. The school was built in 1966. At that time it housed sixth, seventh, and eighth grades. In 1970, it was converted to a junior high school which housed seventh, eighth, and ninth grades. In 1985, it was once again converted to a middle school. Four additional classrooms were added in 1992 allowing the building to accommodate 750 students. In the summer of 1998, all tile and carpet was replaced.
Southwood has been fully accredited by the Southern Association for Colleges and Schools since 1972 and in Southwood was identified as a Title I middle school. The use of Title I funds to improve and promote academic achievement in ELA and Math through the use of technology has been a priority for the administration at Southwood. Teachers and students benefit from the use of many technological devices and programs including Smartboards, digital presenters, and Senteos.
Southwood's faculty, staff, and students are very proud of our accomplishments. We are a South Carolina Red Carpet School. Southwood has earned a state department silver flag five out of the last six years for our academic improvement. Our school is also an official Flagship School of Promise offering our students the five fundamental resources: caring adults, a safe environment, a healthy start, effective education, and opportunities to help others to every student. In the fall of 2009, Southwood also earned the distinction of being one of two schools in South Carolina named an AVID National Demonstration Site.
As a school community, Southwood is dedicated to educating lifelong learners who are able to adapt to and bring about change. We believe that "failure is not an option," and the staff at Southwood Middle School accepts and embraces this responsibility.
